As football fans across the globe know (or at least across Europe) the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship takes on a whole new format this year. For the first time ever, Euro 2020 will be held across the continent! Celebrating the 60th year of the tournament’s inauguration, summer 2020 will see 12 cities in 12 different countries host 51 matches, culminating with the semi-finals and final matches at London’s Wembley Stadium.
That won’t be awkward at all, will it?
Well to be fair folks, the UEFA olive branch of sporting community love and inclusion has stretched well beyond political and geographical Europe for a long time, including both Russian and Israeli teams in their competitions, indeed, one of the chosen 12 this summer is the Azerbaijani capital Baku!
Anyway, enough of that! What we’re interested in right now is Rome and it’s glorious Olympic Stadium - known as the Stadio Olimpico locally. Home to Serie A teams AS Roma and SS Lazio as well as Italy’s national football and rugby teams (see our deals for the Six Nations here), we’re all delighted that the big old bird has been selected for three group matches and a Quarter Final!
Working out as a de-facto home ground for the Azzurri, the Olimpico hosts Euro 2020 Group A, where Italy face Turkey in the inaugural match of the tournament, followed by Switzerland and then finally Wales. There’s then a small chance that those good-looking country boys headed up by the indomitable Mario Balotelli will be back to play in that quarter final match, but sadly we’ll have to wait quite a while before that becomes clear.
